Mountain biking trails in Wales

The BikePark Wales in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, is one of the most prestigious and versatile mountain bike destinations in the UK, considered a paradise for bike enthusiasts of all skill levels. Located in the heart of the South Wales valleys, the park covers approximately 485 hectares in the Gethin Woodland, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It opened in 2013 and is the result of an ambitious project initiated by a group of passionate mountain bikers with the goal of creating a world-class uplift facility that can compete with the best bike parks in Europe. Since then, BikePark Wales has earned an excellent reputation and attracts thousands of visitors from near and far annually.

BikePark Wales for beginners

The central concept of the park is reminiscent of a ski resort: an uplift fleet of minibuses with trailers conveniently takes riders and their bikes to the top of the mountain, from where over 40 diverse trails lead in all directions. These trails are color-coded – from green for beginners to blue and red for intermediate riders, and black and purple for experts – providing something suitable for every taste and skill level. For beginners, there are gentle, flowing trails like "Kermit," a over four-kilometer descent that is considered one of the best introductions to mountain biking, with gentle curves and a consistent gradient that builds confidence. Advanced and expert riders, on the other hand, can enjoy technically challenging trails like "Join the Dots" with steep drops and rocky sections or "Zut Alors," a favorite of the park's team. The diversity ranges from flowy singletracks to jump lines to tricky rock gardens, making the park unique in the British context.

Uplift facilities for mountain bikers

A special feature of BikePark Wales is its year-round usability. Many of the trails are equipped with a weather-resistant surface that provides excellent grip even in typical wet Welsh weather. For those who want to tackle the climb themselves, the "Beast of Burden" trail can be used, a singletrack route that winds up 300 meters in elevation to the summit – a challenge for ambitious riders. Upon reaching the top, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Brecon Beacons, including Pen y Fan, expanding the experience to a scenic dimension.

Best mountain biking destination in UK

The visitor center is the vibrant heart of the park, offering everything needed for a perfect day. There is a cozy café with a selection of hot food, snacks, and drinks – the "loaded fries" and hot chocolate are a hidden gem for many. A bike shop with a workshop and rental service ensures that visitors without their own equipment can fully enjoy the park. The rental bikes are high-quality and well-maintained, and there is a wide range of protective gear, from helmets to full-face masks, knee and elbow pads. For beginners or those looking to improve their skills, coaching sessions are offered, led by experienced trainers who patiently provide tips and explain the trails. A pump track and bike wash station complete the facilities, making the park a place where one can easily spend a whole day.

Family activities at BikePark

The atmosphere at BikePark Wales is characterized by a mix of adrenaline and community spirit. The staff are known for their friendliness and helpfulness, whether loading bikes onto trailers or answering questions about the trails. The park attracts a diverse audience – from families with children enjoying the green trails, to groups of friends, to pro riders honing their skills. The "Ticket to Ride" package, specifically designed for beginners, is particularly popular, offering a guided introduction including equipment. For children, there are easy trails and a pump track that even three-year-olds on balance bikes can enjoy.

BikePark Wales is not just a recreational destination, but also an example of sustainable tourism. The site, once part of a disused coal mining area, has been revitalized, with revenues directly reinvested into the maintenance and expansion of the trail network. The park aims to continuously develop new trails and improve existing ones to remain one of the best mountain bike destinations in the future. Its location, just about three hours from London, also makes it easily accessible.

After booking a trip to bpw for me and my son to be our first trip to the mountain i unfortunately fell il with a virus and totally wiped me out, I contacted the manager Gavin Chard to explain this situation I was in and asked if I could change the dates to another date, reply was NO, you need to cancel 48hrs before, my reply was I can’t schedule being ill please help me out here, NO, just happy to take my £40 off me without any offer of help from a situation I can’t control. I had a reply stating that they needed to organise the amount of staff for the day but can’t see the problem in fix me up another date later on in the month. Beware this business is more corporate not a friendly customer based company like Dyfiy or Dirt farm

Took my son and myself for the ticket to ride beginner experience. Absolutely amazing. The site, the issued gear and bikes were fantastic. Colin, our instructor, was superb. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to try downhill biking.

Park was closed last Sunday due to weather. When I asked specifically for a refund not re-booking vouchers I was still issued vouchers and asked to resubmit these to BPW when BPW had generated them in the first place. From a customer experience standpoint this is really frustrating. Now my refund has finally been acknowledged being told it takes an (additional) 7-10 days to make the transaction. Sure the trails are great but the management are clearly focusing on it being a money making machine. Contact options and phonelines are almost non existent which is never a good sign for a business. Up to you but we won't be going back.

Fell ill with flu 2 days before, contacted them to let them know. But because they are closed Tues and wed no-one picked up the phone or responded to emails until the day of the trip at which point I got told "tough" because I hadn't given them more than 48 hours notice. Which was before I was ill. It had been a trip for my birthday and a mates belated 40th. As with others I just wanted to push that date out to another time when I was well. Absolutely no flexibility, understanding or suggestion of a resolution (e.g. fee for re-arranging, heavily discount tickets for another time). It's black and white. If something unforeseen happens, you lose. I will spend my MTB pennies elsewhere from now on.

Visted BPW numerous times but this weekend did the Jumps course with instructor Grith. He was absolutely fantastic. Really loved guy, super clear and concise with his tuition and was able to give great advice on not only how to master jumping but also bike set up tips and individual feedback by filming progress on the course. Would highly recommend and can't wait to go back for another course to learn better technique! Thanks Grith, top guy! X
